Accessibility

VP Energy wants these tools to be usable by everyone, including people who browse with a keyboard, a screen reader, magnification, or with animation turned down.

What we aim at

We target WCAG 2.1 Level AA. These pages have been tested with an automated accessibility engine (axe-core) covering the WCAG 2.0 and 2.1 A and AA rule sets, and checked by hand for keyboard operation, focus visibility, form labelling, heading structure and behaviour at 320 pixels wide.

What that testing covers, and what it does not

Automated testing reliably finds a portion of accessibility problems — colour contrast, missing labels, missing alternative text, structural errors. It cannot judge whether alternative text is meaningful, whether an interaction makes sense to a screen reader user, or whether a chart conveys its point without sight. We have not yet commissioned an independent audit or testing with assistive-technology users. When we do, this page will say so and give the date.

Specific measures in place

• A skip link as the first item in the tab order on every page
• An explicit, high-contrast focus indicator rather than the browser default
• Text and interface colours meeting the 4.5:1 contrast minimum
• All motion, including the rotating mark and the loading state, disabled automatically for anyone whose system requests reduced motion
• Every form field programmatically labelled
• Layout that reflows without horizontal scrolling down to 320 pixels
• Language declared on every page, and a full Spanish version of each tool

Known limitations

• The load-curve and dispatch charts are drawn as graphics. The figures they illustrate are also given as text on the same page, but the shape of the curve itself is not currently described in words. If that information would be useful to you, call us and we will talk you through your own numbers.
• The interval-data tools require uploading a file from your device. If that step is a barrier, we can take the same information over the phone.
